 🇮🇳 India’s Women’s Football Team Qualifies for AFC Asian Cup 2026: A Historic Milestone


In a moment of historic significance, the Indian Women’s Football Team has successfully qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026, through qualification for the first time on merit. Hosted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the qualification round saw India emerge from Group B which included Thailand, Mongolia, Iraq, and Timor-Leste.



Previously, India had only qualified for the continental championship as hosts (most recently 2003 and 2022). This time India qualified entirely on the field, and marks a new direction for women's football in India.

India played exceptional football throughout the group stage, finishing the campaign unbeaten, whilst achieving a fantastic goal differential: 


🥇 India 13-0 Mongolia – India's biggest ever victory in an AFC match

🥇 India 2-1 Thailand – A back against the wall victory against a higher ranked opponent.


India finished top of group with 24 goals and 1 against and sent a clear message to Asia's best.

The roles and tactics of several players had a significant impact.


Sangita Basfore, a senior midfielder, provided leadership and scored important goals.


Coach Chaoba Devi's tactics revolved around speed, width, and sound decision making, which was evident in every game played.


The players were also at an optimal place physically and mentally because of a 53-day national training camp in Bengaluru before the qualifiers.

💰 Cash Prize from AIFF & Input at the Grassroots Level


In reference to this accomplishment, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has rewarded the team a cash prize of ₹42.75 lakh.

President Kalyan Chaubey and Secretary Shaji Prabhakaran acknowledged the women's team and their understanding of next steps.


This accomplishment was also built upon investment made in the grassroots aspects of football.


The pilots of the ASMITA (All India Women's League) program are also able to start to identify players through a progression from U-13 to U-17.


Under the AIFF's women's development plan, there are now over 155 districts leagues in action - these will have a positive impact into the future.

India is breaking the stereotype of women in sport. Qualification means that with hard work, training, and vision equal anything is possible. 


India’s win against Thailand (FIFA rank 46th) demonstrates the team's potential in competing against strong teams on the global stage. 


The win brings India another step closer to potential qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 and the opportunity to live the ultimate dream.
