🚁 THE INCIDENT

In the early morning hours of June 15, 2025, a helicopter that was transporting pilgrims from Kedarnath to Guptkashi crashed near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand. A Bell 407 that operated under Aryan Aviation, the helicopter lost control due to range and weather issues shortly after takeoff.

According to preliminary reports, the helicopter collided with a hillside in a dense forested area, caught fire on impact, and killed everyone on board. There were five adult pilgrims, an infant –aged two– and the pilot.

The primary cause of the crash was bad weather. The area was enveloped in dense fog and low clouds. When visibility is reduced one cannot tell how high or how low one is flying. And for whatever reason it was decided it was safe for the flight to go. This raises serious issues concerning flight safety compliance and operational decisions.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:20 a.m. shortly after taking off from Kedarnath helipad. The area neighbouring Gaurikund has embedded challenges of steep valleys and highly variable weather patterns that makes flying a real potential risk.

In response to the accident, immediate action was taken:

The Ministry of Civil Aviation suspended all operations of Aryan Aviation. 

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating the cause and culpability. 

A First Information Report (FIR) for culpable homicide of the operator and executives was filed for flying in spite of forewarnings of heavy weather. 

Char Dham helicopter services were suspended until further notice for safety review.

The chief minister of Uttarakhand; Pushkar Singh Dhami ordered a strict review of helicopter operations and pledged to review safety protocols.
